Death
On January 31, 2015, at 05:00 SAST local time, tragedy struck as Simba Mhere embarked on a journey with his friend, blogger, and social commentator Kady-Shay O’Bryan, accompanied by his father, to attend the renowned J&B Met horse race in Cape Town. While en route to O. R. Tambo International Airport, their Mitsubishi vehicle collided with a VW Polo GTI on William Nicol Drive in Fourways, Johannesburg. The collision occurred after the VW Polo GTI veered over an island and encroached into Mhere’s lane.
The devastating head-on collision claimed the lives of Simba, aged 26, and Kady-Shay, aged 29, in the early hours of the morning, while Mhere’s father miraculously survived the crash. Tragically, the accident also resulted in the loss of several other lives, with passengers from at least one other vehicle involved.
Simba Mhere and Kady-Shay O’Bryan were pronounced dead at the scene, prompting an outpouring of grief from colleagues, friends, and fans. A poignant memorial service was held on February 5, 2015, at the Rhema Bible Church in Randburg, South Africa, where heartfelt tributes were paid to honor their memory. Subsequently, Mhere was laid to rest at the Westpark Cemetery following a solemn funeral service.
Following weeks of delays, the suspect, 24-year-old Preshalin Naidoo, faced charges related to culpable homicide and reckless driving on October 29. During the trial, damning evidence emerged, revealing that Naidoo’s car tracker had recorded numerous instances of speeding leading up to the fatal collision. Eyewitness testimonies suggested that Naidoo had confessed to losing control of his vehicle, citing possible mechanical defects or fatigue as contributing factors.
In a landmark verdict, Naidoo was convicted and sentenced to 10 years in prison by the Randburg Magistrate after being found guilty of culpable homicide and reckless driving. Despite his claims of unexpected mechanical defects, evidence presented during the trial, including eyewitness accounts and forensic analysis, painted a stark picture of Naidoo’s culpability in the tragedy. As legal proceedings unfolded, the State closed its case, and investigations revealed that Mhere had survived the initial impact of the crash, adding a poignant layer of complexity to the harrowing ordeal.
